A Bangladeshi, Indian or Pakistani wedding is not a single day. It is a celebration that often stretches across several events, each with its own colours, rituals and emotions. From the turmeric and laughter of the Holud to the quiet, sacred moment of the Akdh and the glamour of the reception, every part of the story deserves to be captured with care.

At Purple Bird Photo, South Asian wedding photography in Sydney, Wollongong and Adelaide is at the heart of what we do. Our team understands the traditions, the family dynamics and the timing of these celebrations, so you can relax and enjoy every moment while we tell your story.

Gaye Holud: Colour, Music and Joy

The Gaye Holud is one of the most vibrant events of a Bangladeshi wedding. Yellow and orange outfits, marigold flowers, haldi paste, sweets and dancing make it a dream for a photographer. We focus on the playful moments: cousins smearing turmeric on the bride and groom, elders giving their blessings, and the energy of the dance floor. We also capture the beautifully decorated stage and the small details, like mehndi-covered hands and floral jewellery.

Akdh / Nikah: The Sacred Moment

The Akdh or Nikah is the spiritual heart of a Muslim wedding. It is often calm, intimate and full of emotion. We work quietly and respectfully, without disturbing the Imam or the family, to capture the signing of the marriage contract, the exchange of rings, and the tears and smiles that follow. Many couples tell us these are the photos they treasure most.

Mehndi and Sangeet

For Indian and Pakistani couples, the Mehndi and Sangeet nights are full of music, dance performances and intricate henna. We love documenting the artistry of the mehndi, the candid laughter between friends, and the big family performances that everyone will want to relive.

The Wedding Reception

The reception brings everything together: the grand entrance, the bridal outfit, the couple's portraits, family photos and the celebration with every guest. Reception halls can be dark or brightly lit with stage lighting, so experience matters. We plan our lighting so your skin tones, the rich reds and golds of your outfits and the stage decor all look true to life.

Why Cultural Understanding Matters

Hiring a photographer who understands South Asian weddings makes a big difference on the day. Here is what we bring to every celebration:

  • Knowledge of the order of rituals, so we never miss the key moments
  • Respect for religious customs, modesty preferences and family elders
  • Experience organising large family group photos quickly and calmly
  • Lighting skills for colourful outfits, jewellery and stage decor
  • Coverage for multi-day events, with photo and video options

Locations We Love: Sydney, Wollongong and Adelaide

We photograph South Asian weddings in function halls and venues across Western and South Western Sydney, the Sydney CBD and the Harbour, and we often take couples outdoors for portraits at places like the Royal Botanic Garden or Observatory Hill. In the Illawarra, we love the Wollongong Botanic Garden, Wollongong Harbour and the coastline around Fairy Meadow and Bulli for pre and post wedding shoots. Our Adelaide team covers weddings and celebrations across South Australia.

Tips for Planning Your South Asian Wedding Photography

  • Share a list of every event, timing and venue with your photographer early
  • Make a short list of family groups you want photographed, with names
  • Plan 20 to 30 minutes for couple portraits at each main event
  • Consider a pre-wedding or post-wedding shoot at a scenic location
  • Book early, as weekends during wedding season fill quickly
