Your graduation day at the University of Wollongong is the finish line of years of late-night study sessions, group assignments and early trains along the Illawarra line. You only get to celebrate this milestone once — so you deserve graduation photos that look as good as the moment feels.

We're Purple Bird Photo & Video, a Wollongong-based team of portrait and event photographers. Since 2021 we've photographed dozens of UOW graduates — solo portraits, best-friend groups, proud parents and whole extended families — on campus and around Wollongong's beaches and lookouts. If you're looking for a graduation photographer in Wollongong, this guide covers everything you need to plan your UOW graduation photoshoot.

Why Hire a Professional Graduation Photographer in Wollongong?

Phone photos are great for Instagram stories, but they rarely do the day justice. A professional graduation photographer gives you:

  • Flattering light, even at midday – we know where the shade falls on campus and how to use flash outdoors, so nobody is squinting or washed out.
  • Relaxed, natural posing – most graduates aren't models. We guide every pose so you look confident, not stiff.
  • Everyone in the frame – no more missing the person holding the phone. Parents, siblings and friends all get their photo with you.
  • Gown, stole and detail shots – we make sure your gown and hood sit properly and capture close-ups of your certificate, flowers and the classic cap toss.
  • A private online gallery – your edited images arrive in a beautiful online gallery, ready to download, share with family overseas and print.

UOW Graduation Ceremonies 2026: Dates & What to Expect

The next UOW Wollongong graduation ceremonies run from Tuesday 3 to Thursday 5 November 2026 in University Hall (Building 11) on the Wollongong campus. Ceremonies are allocated by faculty and school, so check your invitation for your exact session time.

UOW's official ceremony photography partner covers the on-stage moment inside the hall. Where we come in is everything around it — the hugs outside, the cap toss on the lawn, the family portraits and the relaxed, styled photos you'll actually frame. Most graduates book us for one to two hours before or after their ceremony.

Tip: gown hire is included in the UOW graduation fee, so collect your regalia early and give yourself time for photos before the crowds build.

Graduating from UOW Liverpool, Southern Sydney or one of the South Coast campuses? We cover Sydney, Wollongong and the South Coast, so we can come to you too.

Our UOW Graduation Photoshoot Options

1. Ceremony Day Coverage

We meet you on campus before or after your ceremony and capture it all — candid moments with family and friends, solo portraits in your gown, group photos with classmates and the classic cap toss.

2. Pre-Graduation Campus Session

Prefer a quieter campus? Book a session in the days before or after your ceremony. With fewer people around, we can take our time at the Duck Pond, McKinnon Lawn, the iconic University of Wollongong sign and the leafy walkways for a more relaxed, editorial set of portraits.

3. Campus + Wollongong Location Shoot

Combine UOW with an iconic Wollongong backdrop such as Wollongong Head Lighthouse, North Beach or the Wollongong Botanic Garden for a gallery that tells the story of your years in the Illawarra.

4. Friends & Family Graduation Packages

Graduating with friends? Share one session between several graduates and split the cost. Family flying in from overseas? We'll make sure every relative gets their moment with you.

Every package can be customised to suit you. Contact us for our graduation price guide or send us your ceremony date to check availability.

Tips for the Perfect UOW Graduation Photos

  • Book early. November ceremony week is one of our busiest times of the year, and the best time slots go quickly.
  • Choose an outfit that works under the gown. Solid colours and neat collars look great; busy patterns can clash with the UOW blue.
  • Bring props that mean something to you – flowers, your degree certificate, a cultural scarf or sash, or a sign for the cap toss.
  • Plan around the light. Morning and late-afternoon sessions give the softest light. For midday ceremonies, we use open shade and off-camera flash.
  • Leave buffer time. Ceremony days get busy, so allow at least an hour for photos so nobody feels rushed.
