Pregnancy goes by faster than anyone expects, and a maternity photoshoot in Sydney is one of the loveliest ways to remember it. Whether you picture golden-hour light on the harbour, soft sand under your feet or a quiet garden path, Sydney gives you an incredible choice of backdrops within an easy drive. In this guide, Purple Bird Photo & Video shares eight of our favourite maternity photo locations around Sydney, the best time in your pregnancy to book, what to wear and how to make the day feel relaxed rather than rushed.

When Is the Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot?

Most mums-to-be book their maternity session somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage your bump is beautifully defined, but you are usually still comfortable enough to walk a little, sit on the sand or stand for a few poses. If you are expecting twins, or your doctor or midwife has suggested taking it easy, aim a little earlier, around 26 to 30 weeks.

We recommend getting in touch early in your second trimester so you can lock in a weekend date and a sunset time that suits the season. Sydney sunsets range from around 5pm in winter to after 8pm in summer, so your session time will shift through the year.

8 Best Maternity Photoshoot Locations in Sydney

Every location below offers something different. We are happy to help you choose the right one based on your style, mobility and how far you would like to travel.

  • Mrs Macquarie's Chair: The classic Sydney view with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge behind you. Best at sunrise or early morning when it is quieter.
  • Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Lush lawns, shady trees and seasonal flowers right beside the harbour, with plenty of flat paths and spots to rest.
  • Centennial Park: Wide open fields, ponds and avenues of trees. Ideal for a relaxed family-style session with your partner or older children.
  • Bronte and Tamarama: Soft sand, ocean pools and dramatic sandstone cliffs for a coastal, free-spirited feel.
  • Balmoral Beach: Calm, sheltered water and a pretty rotunda on the lower north shore. A gentle option if you prefer not to walk far.
  • Auburn Botanic Gardens: The Japanese garden, with its bridges and water features, gives a peaceful and elegant setting in Western Sydney.
  • Parramatta Park: Historic trees, river views and open grass, convenient for families across Western Sydney.
  • Cronulla and Bate Bay: Golden beaches, coastal heath and big skies for a dreamy sunset maternity shoot in the south.

If outdoor locations are not practical, we can also photograph your maternity session at home. Natural window light, your nursery in progress and familiar surroundings can make for very intimate images.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos

Clothing makes a big difference to how your photos feel. A few simple guidelines help:

  • Flowing gowns and maxi dresses move beautifully in the breeze, especially at the beach or in a park.
  • Fitted dresses or knits highlight the shape of your bump for a clean, modern look.
  • Soft, neutral or earthy tones such as cream, blush, sage, dusty blue or terracotta photograph well in most Sydney locations.
  • Partners and children should coordinate rather than match exactly. Pick two or three colours from the same palette.
  • Cultural outfits such as a saree, lehenga or salwar kameez look stunning, and we love capturing these traditions.

Bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots, a light layer for cooler evenings and a small towel if you plan to sit on sand or grass.

How to Prepare for a Relaxed Session

The best maternity photos come from feeling calm and comfortable. Here is how we help you get there:

  • Eat a light meal beforehand and bring water and a snack.
  • Plan for a session of roughly an hour so there is time to rest between poses.
  • Add meaningful props if you like: an ultrasound print, baby shoes, flowers or a letter to your little one.
  • Think about including your partner, older siblings or even a pet. Some of the sweetest images are the in-between moments.

During the shoot we guide your posing gently, keep things moving at your pace and never ask you to do anything uncomfortable.
